The Snask Poster Competition

Lets set the scene,

Your average Wednesday morning in bed watching whatever crap ITV 2 has install for me that morning, and as I refuse to leave the bed covers where myself and the girlfriend are, I then hear my phone going crazy on my desk.

So I answer the call and on the other end is the lovely Zoe informing me that I have won the Snask poster competition that they set us a few weeks back. The poster competition was non-mandatory but as I love the design they do I thought I'd grab the chance to make some design that I know they would definitely see.

The brief was just that you had the design a poster to advertise the lecture that the ex-grillust boys of Snask are going to be holding here in Carlisle on the 22nd of May 2014.

Not to waffle on for my inspiration I looked at some of the design they do and read a little about them; then I realised the lecture / visit is based around (or at least I think it is) the new book they have brought out, titled "Make Enemies & Gain Fans". I used the style they used as a massive input to how I made the typography for the poster, also the colour palette I used was very much inspired by their website's colours.

I was also inspired by the design that XTC had on one of their LP sleeves, which basically dictates what the use of a design on a sleeve is for. I slightly flipped it and used the idea to dictate the what the use of a lecture design poster is for; and if you have a enough free time to even try and read it you'll see I just made up a load of purposefully outlandish lies, to add some humour.

A conservative way to have fun - Finished images!

As I've been blogging about this for the past month or so and how the moment has come that I can show you all the finished products.

Both myself and James are pretty excited and have made about 5 sales already with a few possible purchases waiting in the wing, but if you give me a message now I'm sure we can hold one for you!

The zine is still only £3.50 and with that you get a 20 page, crude satirical activity book designed to realise the inner political menace inside you. Pages inside the zine include a wordsearch, jokes page and many others that you would typically find in the activity book of your past years, but with a twist.
With the zine you will receive a pack of colouring crayons and 6 satirical stickers to mark your mark on society or your friends house.

Ceramics are the order of the day!

Sunday the 27th of April - the day to be firing ceramics in the Morecambe area!

I spent my past Sunday in the presence of the lovely Claire Orange (Jabberwocky Ceramics) and her helpful helpers. I spent the day most Raku firing pots and adding glazes to pots that I had made t'other week, but although that sounds mundane I can assure you that it is exceptionally fun.

If you are unaware of  the concept of Raku firing it is made with special clay and glazes, these have to be special because you fire them at 800 - 1000 degrees centigrade in a purpose built kiln.
They fire for about 15 - 20 minutes and that is a vastly faster firing than regular clay, as regular clay often fires for up to 24 hours.

It was a really fun day and I would recommend it to anybody interested, if even slightly in ceramics!
There are often pots pre-made for you, so if you are feeling creative but not crafty you can just paint glazes onto a pot and watch it fire for the sake of an hour of fun and five whole English pounds.
